I read recently that the government are thinking of bringing the speed limit down in built-up areas and on country roads and they tell us it’s to cut accidents and save lives. Now whether it’s drinking too much herbal infusion that makes me suspicious or the government’s tendency towards lying through their back teeth I’m not sure, but after some thought I came to the following conclusion:
Either they are telling the truth and lower speed limits do save lives by reducing the impact damage caused in an accident.
Or they are telling the truth and lower speed limits do save lives because all the drivers and passengers are asleep from boredom when they have an accident so they suffer less blunt-force trauma as a result.
Or they are feeding us a load of bullshit, and the Euromeisters in Brussels have concluded that British roads need to be upgraded to come in line with the rest of Europe, since they are so appallingly maintained that they are considered unsafe to drive on at the current speed limit. Our government therefore, being skint as well as devious have decided that it’s cheaper to cut the speed limit than to spend Jaqui Smith’s rent allowance on making the roads safe. What do you think?
